Sunrise Mountain Football Captures Their Home Opener

The Sunrise Mountain football team picked up their first victory Friday with a  24-13 win over Democracy Prep at home.

Democracy Prep was winning 6-0 after the first quarter, but the Miners rallied with a second-quarter touchdown with 3:04 remaining to tie the game as senior quarterback Tyree Hayes competed a five-yard pass to junior Link Rhodes. The team then converted the two-point conversion as Hayes connected with junior Da Maurier Alexander to give Sunrise Mountain a 8-6 lead at intermission.

The team fell behind as Democracy Prep scored a second time, making it 13-7.

However, the team came back strong in the fourth quarter as Alexander ran a three-yard TD in with 6:31 remaining in the game to tie the game. Alexander scored on the two-point conversion as well to give the Miners a 16-13 lead.

Then with 3:01 left, Hayes connected with Rhodes for a 85-yard touchdown from Rhodes to put the game away. Hayes added two more points by running the ball in for the two-point conversion.

Sunrise Mountain improves its record to 1-2 as they totaled 334 yards, including 163 passing yards.
