Nidian Navarrete feels that she’s always been a leader especially now that Sunrise Mountain Echo adviser, Mr. Stolzenberg, has promoted her to Editor-in-Chief for this year.

Navarrete has been involved with Journalism all four years of high school; putting in the work as a staff writer and editor to make the SMHS newspaper better. The newspaper was ranked second for Best Newspaper last year by The Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Her experience and positive attitude making her even more fit to take charge of and represent the newspaper.

“I believe I’ve always been a leader,” stated Navarrete. “However, I now have the title and more people are beginning to look up to me.”

Stolzenberg explained that while the decision was being made last year, there were in fact two people being considered for the position, but he still notified Navarrete that she was one.

“At some point everyone thinks about possibly being Editor-in-Chief,” elaborated Navarrete. “But as soon as they finally tell you- it hits you. It didn’t really hit me until this year when he made it official.”

Navarrete continued explaining how much of a shock it is saying that she pretty much represents the team and is excited to see her ideas come to life within the paper.

“Both students were fantastic, but I felt like Nidian had a really great junior year,” said Stolzenberg. “She really stepped up and took her writing, designing, and leadership skills to a whole other level. So far this year she’s been great. She’s been all over everything and just super creative in general.”

Stolzenberg even went as far as to say that their first issue is the best first issue Sunrise has ever had. Navarrete designed the front page and put in the idea for the music spread in the middle. Not to mention she’s the one who oversees the progress along the way.
