One goal this year at Sunrise Mountain is to get students to understand the meaning of the word commitment. That’s one reason why the school created a freshman signing banner for students to show that they are committed to graduating in four years.

“Freshman year is probably one of the most difficult one for kids,” Principal Ms. Llapur said. “As in matter of fact, if kids are going to drop out, it’s during their ninth-grade year kind of determines everything.”

Alex Bernal, an employee of Clark County Park and Recreation Center, came in to talk to the freshman’s about how it is important to always stay in school and have all your credits earn for graduation. He had a good pep talk to the freshmen and the school hopes that his advice might rub off of many of the students.

Bernal talked about how he hung out with the wrong people that made him not get all his credits by his senior year. His choices and actions made him the person who he was before. By the end of his freshman year he earned just a half credit which is not even half of the requirement for graduation now.

“I’m going to keep my promise, study hard always and be the biggest influencer I can to the people around me,” freshman Karen Horta said.

“I will keep my promise to graduate,” freshman Michael Wright said. “I’m going to focus on school and don’t worry about nobody else.”

Not only does it help for their own good but it helps our graduation rate to go higher and higher each year and show a good impact on our district.

It’s a lot of work, but everything that you’re doing now will pay off in the long run.

“Estudia por que ese papelito, tu diploma nadie te lo puede quitar,” Llapur said at the Class of 2017 graduation. In translation, she said, “study because that little piece of paper, your diploma nobody can take that away from you.”
