The Sunrise Mountain boys’ basketball team played a tournament at the Pepsi Holiday Classic in Flagstaff, Arizona Saturday. While the team dropped two of their three games there, it was a great pre-season tournament for the Miners to get ready for the season.

The Miners won their first game of the tournament by two points, 65-63, over Snowflake High School from Arizona. In this game senior Tyree Hayes lead the team with 20 points.

They played the next game and lost 70-52 to Winslow High School from Arizona. It was one of their toughest games at the tournament. Sophomore Dail’Quan Sykes leaded in points for Sunrise with 18 points.

“We were getting dominated throughout the whole game,” said junior Miguel Cruz.” We started playing good at the end, but it was too late.”

For the final game, they needed to win to qualify for quarterfinals but lost that game as well, 52-33 to Coconino High School, also from Arizona.

“We didn’t put our 100 percent into this tournament,” said senior Moises Garcia. “This is why we play these pre-season games to be prepared for the regular season.
