Mr. Stolzenberg and a group of selected students attended the 43rd annual Las Vegas Review-Journal High School Journalism Awards last Monday as the Sunrise Mountain Echo placed third in the Best Newspaper Category. Although our newspaper didn’t come in first overall, the Echo picked up a record-number of first-place individual victories.

When it came to Best Illustration, senior Kalana Em won first place for her drawing of famous rapper XXXTentacion. As a matter of fact, the entire page won first as well for Best Feature, Arts or Entertainment page for its design and format. That award was given to senior Editor-in-Chief Nidian Navarette and Assistant Editor-in-Chief Leticia Gonzalez.

“We put a lot of effort into that doubletruck,” explained Navarette. “We stayed after school, came in during lunches. Overall we were really happy with how the page came out and that the judges were content too.”

The newspaper won another first place for Best News Feature story to the trio of sophomore Lizbeth Juarez and juniors Rodsheanna Lewis and Ericka Soliman for their in-depth story about late buses affecting class grades.

“I was real proud at how well we did in many of the individual categories,” elaborated Stolzenberg. “The program is getting better and better and I hope for more next year.”

The Echo also picked up two second place victories as junior Abril Rodriguez won an award for Best Sports Design, while Em won a second cartooning award, second place in the Best Editorial Cartoon category. Lewis also won honorable mention in the Best News Feature category as well.
