The new season has begun for the Miners boys basketball team under a new head coach for this season.

The Miners started the season off strong for the first two games. They picked up victories against SECTA, 62-48, and Del Sol, 66-57.

After those two wins, the Miners would then go on a three-game losing streak they would go on to lose to Legacy, Bonanza, and Mojave high schools.

“We just got be focused on the game plan to keep succeeding as a team,” said junior Kaidence Young.

The closest game in that three game stretch was the game against Mojave as the team lost by just one point, 61-60.

After the three-game losing streak, the Miners bounced back against Rancho with an 80-70 victory here on the mountain.

The leading scorer for the game against Rancho was junior Dai’quan Sykes, who had a total of 30 points in this victory.

“It was a good team win for us we just got to keep on playing like today to win more games,” said Sykes.

The next two games were tough again for Sunrise Mountain. The team dropped games to both Green Valley and Boulder City.

The top two scorers this season for the Miners are Young and Sykes. Young is averaging 13.8 points with 1.3 rebounds a game. Sykes is averaging 21.3 points with 2.0 rebounds a game.
