The first thing you think of when you start high school is, ‘I can’t wait to be a senior. I can’t wait for my graduation, Prom, the senior trip, senior pranks, senior pictures, Senior Sunset, Senior Sunrise, less classes, and just enjoying the year.
This is what the class of 2021 thought of when they entered through Sunrise Mountains’ doors almost four years ago. Nobody ever thought these traditions would change.
In the blink of an eye all of our dreams were changed. Everything we waited so long for could slip right through our fingers.
As a senior myself, this year has been particularly tough. We took so much for granted, and we had to go through a devastating pandemic to realize it.
I remember waking up at six in the morning wishing something would happen that would make school close. I longed for school breaks and summer vacation. In class, I would count down the minutes for class to be over and then the hours for school to be over.
As I walked through the hallways, in my head, I would think, two classes down two more to go. I waited desperately for the final bell to ring meaning I could finally go home.
Oh how times have changed! Now I would wake up at five in the morning if it meant everything would be normal once again. I wouldn’t care to wait for the bus during the winter.
Senior year is the year where you need the most help from others. You need your family for emotional support. You need your friends to let loose when you’re too stressed out.
Teachers when you need advice, counselors when you’re not sure what to do, and school administrators for that extra support. Even though our school has done a great job in helping us seniors out in the best way they can, it’s just not the same.
Seeing each other through a screen does not create bonds the way physical appearance does. Even with friends, it’s not the same. The connection that being there in person can never be substituted for a pixelated image.
Even so, there are many things that seniors can do to make the most of this year. Staying in touch with school friends is really important. I’m in a group chat with a bunch of seniors and it has really helped me so far.
Some of us have the same classes so we help each other out when we don’t understand an assignment or if we missed class that day. Even if we have different classes, everyone tries to help if someone needs it.
If someone is stressed out everyone tries to support them and make their day a little better. Sometimes that’s what you need, just some extra support to take away some stress.
To be honest, I was a bit surprised as I do not know most of the people in that chat, but even so they have helped me and I’ve been able to get to know them better after years of being in the same classes.
It also doesn’t hurt to meet up with friends from time to time. As long as all necessary precautions are taken. Of course school work is important but sometimes it’s good to just hang out with friends and have some fun because being constantly stressed over school work is also not good.
Maybe facetime with friends while you all decorate your seniors crowns or even start planning the senior prank just in case we do go back.
I’m sure there are many students who have really good ideas about fun things that we can do even now. Tell your teachers, tell your counselor, you never know we just might be able to do it.
If we can’t go through the normal path, then let’s create a new one, make history. Come on class of 2021, let’s make this year just as fun as all the others.
Lets work with what we have and make it even better because I know all of us have worked hard for three years, late nights, projects, headaches, cramped hands, and maybe even some crying.
So we need to make our senior year the best ever. You deserve it! Lets go Miners!
