Spring sports didn’t get too far last year as only a handful of teams got practices in such as baseball. However, there is a good chance that spring sports will take the field later this year as well as some fall intramurals.

Governor Sisolak relaxed some restrictions recently and now the Clark County School District revealed Thursday its plan open up schools soon and presented a timeline to get athletes back onto the field this spring. These plans still need approval from the Clark County School Board as well as the teacher’s union.

The district is planning to get spring sports first. Practices will begin on April 3, 2021. Competitions begin on April 16, 2021. However, there will still be some restrictions placed on athletes.

“There will be a lot of new safety measures in place, the way teams enter and exit the building/field will be different,” said Sunrise Mountain athletic director Mr. Morales. “Players will have to wear masks when entering and exiting the building and at the end of the game there will be no hand shakes to avoid contact. These are just a few of the safety measures being implemented and as we get closer I’m sure more will be implemented.”

The sports returning will include boys and girls track, boys and girls swimming and diving, baseball, softball, boys golf and boys volleyball.

Early indications are that athletes will not be forced to wear masks as the play, but they have the option to wear one if they so choose.

“The only real change that will affect athletes will be that they can wear a mask during competition,” said Morales. “With that being said it is up to the athlete if they would like to wear the mask.”

Fall sports will appear during a window between April 5 – May 1, 2021, but will only be intramurals.

Full-contact football will be the first fall sport to begin, starting on April 5th with 20 days of practice, followed by a one-game intrasquad scrimmage. Football intramural window is earlier to allow for the yearly helmets and pads to be reconditioned in time for the regular 2021-22 fall season.

The remaining fall intramural sports will return on May 3 and run through May 22nd. Among those sports are boys and girls tennis, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross country and girls volleyball will return.

There is still little word on what intramurals will look like.

“Unfortunately, I have no idea,” said boys soccer coach Mr. Mohrbacher. “I think some players will not come back but I have no information yet. I would think I will get some information soon, but the district does not notify teachers/coaches of anything before the public.”

There will be changes when sports come back. However, no spectators will be allowed at any CCSD events.

“I think the main difference you will see right away is that there will be no spectators at any games,” said Morales. “Other than that the games will be played normally.”

School athletics will follow all guidelines from CCSD, the state, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA)
